I created this bright & colorful collection of hearts with recycled soda pop cans!

Inspired by my wine charms called Recycled 2 Party, I began to put these little hearts to work to create this fun collection of art for the wall or table top. I just love using the wonderful colors and patterns of the soda cans and have used them in many of my creations!

They have been cut, washed, & mounted with raised tabs on acid free card stock. Each heart is unique--creating a truly one-of-kind piece of art!

Perfect for Valentine's Day!

It's hard to believe that this picture was taken yesterday!

It WAS April Fool's Day, but this was no joke! We actually woke up to this beautiful snowy winter scene on April 1, 2011! I'm sure our resident Red Bellied Woodpecker was wondering what happened! Only the week before we were enjoying 80 degree weather (Also not typical for NJ) and I planted these gorgeous Violas!

Aren't they amazing!

Violas and Pansies are my favorite spring flowers to plant in early spring. They are extremely hardy and have bounced back already after being snow laden yesterday! My garden is in full bloom with white snowdrops and blue snow glories are just beginning to dot my garden!

A week ago during our short lived warm spell, things were just beginning to come back to life after a very long, cold winter. Anxious to get out and work in my garden, I got my first blisters of the season raking around my gardens! I cleaned up our two ponds and got the waterfall working again only to find out it has a leak somewhere along its path. The frogs came out to enjoy the warmth of the sun and watch me fuss around the pond, patiently waiting for me to leave.

Hopefully this snow melts quickly and we've seen the last of it until next winter! I'm so ready for spring!

I love hearing the birds happily singing, watching the chipmunks busy scurrying around looking for seed at the base of the bird feeder, and laughing how the squirrels have managed to make the feeder into their version of McDonalds, dining on my bird seed!

Spring is here ---- if only the weather would co-operate! !

This month I had the good fortune to have one of my beaded necklaces included in a wonderful online beading magazine, The Beading Times! My Freshwater Pearls and Copper Necklace was featured with square beads in the Design Corner(September issue). This column features a different bead shape each month, offering lots of wonderful examples to inspire the reader and get those creative juices flowing!
Editor Sandra J. Paluzzi offers great beading, design, and marketing tips for the beading enthusiast. Meet featured bead artists, and enjoy a free monthly bead project! Clear, step by step instructions and great pictures make it easy to follow along! I loved this month's project, a framed bead pendant by Carol Ladine Lagoski!

Sandy also owns The Bead Peddler (Wholesale Beads, Beading Supplies and open to the Public) and has a shop on Etsy, beadpeddler.

It was very exciting for me to have a piece of my jewelry included in this informative online magazine, especially after the difficult summer I had. It was just what I needed to get that little spark back into me!

Not Camera Shy!!!

While sitting on the beach reading my favorite jewelry magazines,

I noticed this Herring Gull watching me.
After 5 -10 minutes went by, I looked up again and

realized he hadn't moved! So, I slowly took my camera out

of my beach bag and started taking pictures.

Instead of flying away,

he seemed very curious and walked closer to check out my

shiny silver camera! Unfortunately, he got so close

many of the pictures came out blurry!

Later the same day, this little Laughing Gull

decided he wanted to be in pictures too!

This Storm Started Backwards!!

While we were on our vacation at the Jersey Shore

I unwittingly captured this strange storm that actually started backwards?!

After having dinner on our deck that overlooks the ocean, I spotted this beautiful rainbow in the sky! I quickly grabbed the camera (which is never too far away) to see if I could catch what I thought was a fleeting rainbow. The day was hot and sunny---- perfect beach weather, for our first day at the shore! There was no mention of showers or rain in the weather report.

But, as I began taking pictures, I realized that the rainbow was beginning to change.

Clouds began to form.

As the rainbow began to fade (left) this cloud formation began to form over the ocean to the right of it. The sun was beginning to set, giving the clouds a rosy/purple glow.

Then the rain began.

The rainbow was now totally replaced by this mushroom type cloud that seemed to rise from the ocean!

The sky looked threatening but it also reminded me of cotton candy! The gorgeous blue sky above this storm was such a pretty contrast to the cotton-like clouds.

As the storm moved off into the distance I was able to see the rain coming down only from the vertical cloud. In the picture, it looks like a UFO hiding behind a large cloud!!

Eventually, the whole storm moved out to sea!

It was amazing!

I'm so glad I had my camera to capture it!

We had a wonderful week with lots of sun, and some rain (mainly at night!) I saw dolphins swim by, a whale spouting water several times before moving off, lots of surfers and even wind surfers! The waves were big and the sand was beautiful but hot, hot, hot! I picked up lots of shells for my mosaics and even found some wonderful pieces of seaglass!

Vacation is wonderful.....but there's no place like home! We were happily greeted with wagging tails, and doggy kisses by our family pets!

Growing up close to the Connecticut shore, I was at the beach anytime I had a free hour or two! During the summer months through college I worked on Cape Cod, MA, and after graduation found myself living along the Maine coastline. The daylily above is one of many I have flowering in my yard. They are so pretty, and grow wild along many of the roads and woodlands here in NJ. They are called daylilies because each flower only blooms for one day! Luckily, daylilies have many buds to extend their flower time!

Wednesday.s Woodland Walk

This is one of the many birdhouses scattered along our woodland path. I painted this birdhouse with my children about 10 years ago. It has had many occupants over the years, but the past couple of years I noticed during very bad rain storms, you can usually see a little face peering out! Our gray squirrels are quite inventive and have renovated many different items around the yard (many of them my birdhouses) into little safe havens!

Goatsbeard (Bride's Feather's) - Arnucus dioicus

A wonderful 3-6' native woodland plant. Arnucus means goat beard in greek. I love its airy white plumes of tiny white flowers that rise above many of the other woodland plants.

Orange Honeysuckle - Lonicera ciliosa

Vines are also an interesting part of a woodland setting. Many times here in the east you will find virginia creeper, boston ivy, escaped wisteria vines and many other vines, climbing up tree trunks, rocks, or along the ground. Many of our trees were covered with wisteria vines when we bought our home. Wisteria slowly strangles your trees to death, so we cut them all down and had to diligently keep an eye out for newcomers. We also had virginia creeper, that too lovcs to climb up the trunks of the trees giving a beautiful vertical dimension to the woods, however, I like to keep them short enough to be able to keep it under control.

Along our back fence I planted orange honeysuckle vines for added privacy from our neighbors. They can grow up to 18' along the ground or scramble up fences and other vertical structures. They are so pretty with their beautiful yellow/orange trumpet shaped flowers. However, the berries on this plant can be mildly poisonous if eaten by people, so beware of planting this if you have small children.

Hummingbirds love these vines!

Yellow Foxglove - Digitalis grandiflora

They really stand out in the woodland setting with their pretty pale yellow flower spikes and dark green leaves.

Oakleaf Foamflower

The native foamflower bloomed earlier in the spring, but this is a hybrid called the oakleaf foamflower, receiving that common name because of the shape of its oak-like leaves. It is blooming now during the late spring.

Necklace Inspired by Lilies of the Valley

Surrounded by lilies of the valley, my cat decides to sit right in the middle of them! Their beautiful white bells dangle off a single stem between two big green leaves. I have always loved picking them in little bouquets to bring into the house. It only takes a few stems of these little bell shaped flowers to fill a room with its wonderful scent!

Each spring they fill my front yard with an incredible sweet aroma!

No wonder they use this wonderful scent in perfumes!

They have pretty orange/red berries in the late summer/fall, but I'm always sad to see their flowers fade!

Simply Sophia Antiqued Brass Necklace

I created this wonderful antiqued brass necklace to capture the graceful beauty of one of my favorite spring flowers! The Lilies of the Valley! Two Swarovski bicone crystals frame each side of this lovely stamped brass pendant, giving it a gorgeous sparkle!

Wednesday's Woodland Walk

Jack in the Pulpit- Arisaema triphyllum

These amazing plants are so unique and perfect for a woodland garden! They received their common name because the flower looks like a pulpit with a person inside! Why they called him Jack is a mystery to me!

Another very interesting fact about this plant is that it changes it's sex!! I'm not sure what triggers this change from male to female, because in my garden it can be a male for several years and then come up female another year!

Male flowers are usually on plants that have one set of 3 leaves, and the female flowers seem to produce 2 sets of 3 leaves with a second surprise in the late summer/fall by producing pretty bright red berries!

Nature is incredible when you stop and look around!

Jack-in-the-Pulpits are 1' to 3' perennials that thrive in average to rich organic soil in partly shaded conditions ( but will grow in light shady spots). They also need average to moist soil, the latter being the ideal. They are found in moist woodlands and the edges of swamp lands from Canada to Southern, USA. These unique flowers bloom April to June.

They are a wonderful addition to any woodland path or garden.

Like all wildflowers, never remove them from the wild and remember to purchase them from Nurseries that guarantee they are 100% nursery propagated!

I hope they find a place in your woodland garden!

As I was walking through my woodland path today, the birds suddenly fell very quiet. It felt a bit eerie!! You don't realize how many wonderful sounds are in the woods until everything goes quiet! Then I heard the piercing cries of the red tailed hawk. I've seen him fly over head occassionally, so, I guess all the creatures went silent hoping they wouldn't be his next meal!

He landed in my neighbors tree on a limb that looks over her bird feeders. He was pretty close! But while trying to get closer to get a good picture, off he flew! He could have at least waited a few minutes to pose for me!!

Oh well, I'll try again when he returns!

Oddly enough, I felt destined to write about fish this evening!

Last night we had fish for dinner! Today, I spent the afternoon catching my front yard goldfish and moving them into my backyard pond. (the pump to my front yard pond broke) It wasn't as easy as it would seem, my fish are quite fast and proved to be a challenging game of hide and seek!!

Once they were all happily swimming around in the larger pond, I came inside to rest for awhile, only to be informed by my son that he was going fishing with his friends at the local pond! (thankfully, they always throw the fish back in!)

Was it fate? I don't know, but I decided to go catch myself some whimsical fish on etsy!!

Swirling Flowers Birdhouse

I just love creating these wonderful whimsical birdhouses! They can be found in my Etsy and Artfire Shops.

Move in ready! These adorable wood birdhouses are both pretty and functional for outdoor use by any lucky bird! (nice for indoor decoration also)

Recycled soda cans create these funky flowers, birds and other decorations that make each birdhouse unique. Copper and brass nails, securely attach all the flowers and edges are sanded for the safety of our feathered occupants!

Recycled Charm Birdhouse

These charming wooden birdhouses have been hand painted with a high quality outdoor acrylic paint in a variety of beautiful colors! The inside of these houses have been left natural for the safety of the birds.

There is a front latch for security and easy cleaning. Venting in the back allows for good air circulation. A wire hook is included on all birdhouses to provide easy hanging!

If you think your backyard birds may like a different color combination, I would be happy to make one that will make them sing!

The dimensions are 7”x 5 1/2” x 8”ht. It has a 1” hole.

My Collection of Trilliums on Wednesday's Woodland Walk

Trillium erectum 'album'

Ahh, I just love trilliums! It has taken me years of patience to finally be able to enjoy a woodland path that is dotted with a variety of these amazing flowers! It can take up to 6-8 years for a trillium to go from seed to actually flowering, but it is soooo worth the wait!

Trillium

I discovered my first trillium while digging up ferns from a property that was going to become a road into a new housing development. I had obtained permission from the builder to take whatever plants I wanted since they were clearing everything and would soon be paved over with asphalt! (Note: It is always important to get a property owners permission before taking a plant. Many wildflowers are in decline, some are endangered, because of people taking them from the wild or over development. So I highly reccommend finding a nursery that grows wildflowers to buy from, unless, like this situation where the plants will be killed from construction).

It was a little nodding trillium, standing alone in the path of destruction. I'm so glad I was there to rescue it! They are not the showiest of trilliums because its flower nods down below its leaves. After years of it blooming for me, the past two years it abruptly stopped, it is growing heartily and has actually multiplied into several plants now, so where the flowers are is another mystery! I only have a picture of its leaves, which I'll spare you!

Purple Trillium - Trillium etectum

Many of my trilliums came in a mail order of purple trilliums years ago, they were shipped to me bareroot by a wildflower nursery. To my surprise, I think I only received a couple of actual purple trilliums. After many years, some are just now blooming and they look a bit different! So, I'm a bit baffled as to the exact name of some of the trilliums that have now begun blooming, one is even yellow! (I'd be thrilled if someone could identify them for me since I have spent hours on the internet trying to accurately ID them.) It is important to make sure that the nursery you purchase wildflowers from, commercially grow them, and don't collect them from the wild. A practice we don't want to encourage since they can deplete them from an area. )

Whatever their names, I enjoy being surprised with their beautiful flowers each spring!

Trillium means three-parted lily. Trilliums have three whorled leaves and a three petaled flower that comes from the center of the leaves. They can vary in color, size, mottled or solid green leaves and a host of other differences, so they can be a bit difficult to identify correctly!

Western White Trillium -Trillium ovatum (?)

White trilliums start to turn pink once they have been pollinated! This really confused me before I learned this fact. One day I was looking at a beautiful white flower and then a few days later I came out and found a pink one in its place!! I thought maybe the garden fairies were playing a trick on me!

Some interesting facts about Trilliums:

* The White trillium has been known to symbolize the Holy Trinity in the Christian faith, because it's parts are in three's representing the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as being one.

*It is said that picking a white trillium off a mountain brings rain!

*The white flower of a White Trillium often is used to symbolize purity, beauty or recovery.

* The root of a trillium is used in natural medicine for a variety of ailments.

*It was given the nickname birthroot by the indigenous North Americans who used it as a birthing aid!

*It is the state flower of Ohio.

*It is the emblem of the province of Onterio, Canada.

* Ants are the main source of how trillium seeds are spread!

Prarie Trillium - Trillium recurvatum (?)

Trilliums are often a favorite flower for the white tailed deer to dine on. Picking a trillium can seriously injure or kill the plant taking years for it to recover. Before we raised the wire fencing on our property, I had to put wire cages on my plants so they wouldn't be eaten by our local deer!

Recycled 2 Party Funky Daisy Wine Charms

Soda was always a favorite drink of mine when I was younger! I remember visiting my grandmother's house and making a beeline to her pantry where she kept a wooden crate filled with glass soda bottles in a large assortment of wonderful flavors! I'm really dating myself, but back then, she not only had her milk delivered, but also these crates of SODA!! Can you believe it?

Even back then I was a packrat, saving all the colorful bottle caps! I just couldn't throw them out, so I would make up games using them. I don't know what ever happened to my huge bag of bottle caps, but once I had my own children, that old urge of collecting began to take over again. I had a hard time throwing out all those colorful soda cans and once again begain saving them! I knew someday I would find something to do with them! As my little bag of cans grew to an over flowing garbage can, my husband began asking me to do something with them or he would!

Hmmm! Still not having a clue what I wanted to do with them, I decided to start cutting them up so they would lay flat and I could happily continue collecting them! As I was cutting them up I saw a shape that liked and cut it out. It was a great shape, but what could I do with it? That's how my Recycled 2 Party Wine Charms were born! I just love working with all the different colors and patterns that are on these cans. I have lots of new shapes and ideas for them, so I hope you stop by every so often to see what I've been up to!! I'm so happy I have been able to recycle my aluminum cans into something fun and useful.

All the cans I use are recycled. They are washed and the edges are sanded so there are no sharp edges. Sometimes they may have little surface imperfections since they are recycled but I think this just adds a bit more history and charm to the pieces!

I enjoy creating wine charm sets using school colors (Wine Charms on the left are Penn States School Colors) great for graduation presents, coach or teacher gifts! Fun wine charms even represent different companies like this shoprite cart(picture on the right)! This would be so much fun as a gift for someone who worked or always shopped at shoprite!

Viola pubescens

This week, most of the violets are blooming along our woodland path. Violets have always enchanted me since I was a little girl. I remember collecting all the beautiful purple/blue flowers into little bouquets before the lawn would be cut! They were so delicate! As I spent more and more time in the woods hiking, I happily discovered that there were many different colored violets!

When my husband and I moved into our home and created our woodland path, one of my goals was to start collecting a variety of violets. Right now I probably have 6-8 different varieties that I slowly gathered from friends yards and native wildflower sales.

Common Blue Violet- Viola sororia

Although there are so many different flowers in bloom this week, I thought I would concentrate on these little beauties! Many people take violets for granted and don't really stop and enjoy these delicate flowers. The common blue or white violet can become a nuisance, popping up in little colonies in your lawn, but the next time you see them, stop and take another look. Better yet, make yourself a little bouquet! They are so charming in a little vase! You'll be amazed at their beauty!

I like to make little bouquets with some of my violets. My yellow violets haven't spread enough for me to want to steal a flower or two, but I'm sure next year I will be enjoying them in my little vases too!

Hairy Violet -Viola hirta

The violet is New Jersey's State Flower! It is also the state flower for Wisconson, Illinois, and Rhode Island.

I'm not sure what the name of this was, but it is a beautiful reddish purple color, very striking when its mixed with the other violets.

Sweet White Violet - Viola blanda

These small violets are very fragrant. They grow to a height of 3-5". Their shiny dark green leaves and flowers are on separate stems.

'Freckles' Violet - Viola sororia 'Freckles'

Did you know that violet leaves are rich in vitamins A & C? Believe it or not, you can add them to your salads, cook them as greens (like spinach) or garnish cold soups. Their flowers are also edible, and can be made into candies and jellies!! I believe Martha Stewart explains how to sugar them and add them to cakes for edible decorations. They can also be used to decorate pastries, and fruit desserts. Just remember to only eat plants that were not sprayed with pesticides. If you chemically treat your lawn, you may not want to go grazing on it!!

Their fragrance can be extracted by steeping their flowers and leaves in water until it smells fragrant. This Violet Water, can then be used in teas, scent bedding or clothing (if rinsed or sprayed with it), and scent or flavor many other wonderful products.

Violets have also been used for medicinal purposes such as treating headaches, colds, coughs, sore throats and constipation.

PS Through the years I have lost many of the exact names of these flowers, so a few may be misnamed by me. Hopefully with a little more research I will be able to verify that these are accurately named!

Creeping Woodland Phlox

Woodland wildflowers have their own beautiful charm! After years of being an avid hiker, I am so happy to be able to enjoy many of these flowers in my own backyard!

The spring is my favorite season in the woods when everything is sprouting and the native flowers are blooming in a carpet of color. This week the creeping woodland phlox are beginning to bloom in pretty shades of purple and pink.

This week I thought I would give you little snap shots of pretty areas along my path.

White Foamflowers, Purple Violets, Pink Bleeding Hearts

These cheerful bright yellow flowers line my woodland path. I started with one little plant that originally died. Two years later I was surprised to see another little plant in bloom! I guess it had reseeded it self before it met its sad demise. Now, years later, I have celandine poppies scattered throughout the woods! They grow approximately 10-15", have nice deeply cut leaves and bloom throughout the summer.

Wild Columbine - Aqueliga canadensis

Its hard to believe that it is mid April already! The weather has been perfect for planting and doing yard work. The leaves are beginning to unfurl and the plants along the woodland path are beginning to rapidly fill in. There are so many things in bloom right now that I'm not sure where to look first!

Pink Bleeding Hearts, Yellow Celandine Poppies & White Trilliums

Blooming in large colonies in different areas of my path are Wild Oats. They have one inch creamy yellow bell shaped flowers dangling beneath unstalked leaves. One might easily miss these 6-12" gems if not looking carefully. But I think they are charming!

Wild Oats - Uvularia sessilifolia

Wildflowers can sometimes be challenging even for the best of gardeners! For me, there have been several wildflowers that have been difficult to establish in my garden.

However, it makes them even more special to me as I walk along and spot them in bloom!

The Trout Lily is one of those baffling wildflowers that I patiently waited for 23 years to finally have one bloom!! Needless to say, I was doing the happy dance all day! Something my kids didn't appreciate!

Growing up, these amazing small 4-10" trout lilies grew along the banks of a woodland stream that ran through our property. Each spring they carpeted the banks with their beautiful clear yellow, lily-like flowers, and purplish brown mottled leaves, only to quietly disappear by the summer. I always loved them! I knew it may take up to 4-7 years for them to bloom, but 23 years! When transplanted along my path, they quickly grew like wildfire giving me a sea of beautiful leaves but no flowers until 2 years ago when I saw one little yellow flower blooming in the middle of all those leaves!! I couldn't believe my eyes, but here's the picture that captured that glorious moment!

Trout Lily (Dog Tooth Violet) - Erythronium americanum

This lovely plant has two common names. Many people refer to it by Trout Lily because it blooms at the beginning of Trout season and their leaves look similar to brook trout swimming under the water of rippling streams. Dog Tooth Violet, refers to the tooth-like shape of its white underground bulb.

Wild Columbine - Aquilega canadensis

This striking perennial wildflower jumps out at you with its gorgeous one to two inch red and yellow nodding flowers! Hummingbirds love to visit this native wildflower for its nectar from its long backward pointing spurs or tubes. Certain insects and Hummingbirds use their long tongues to extract the nectar as they hover below the blooms.

I often see columbines in rocky areas tucked inbetween rocks or cliffs when I hike. It grows one to two feet, is a short lived perennial (usually lasting for 3-4 years), and should reseed itself.

I have experimented planting this wildflower in many different areas of my woodland path, only to be disappointed that it has never reseeded itself for me! So every couple of years I find myself purchasing another plant or two. I really hope this one will like its spot and reseed for me! There is also a yellow form of this columbine which is just as beautiful, but equally difficult for me to keep in my woodland garden! If anyone has a tip on how to get it to reseed let me know!

Wood Anemone - Anemone quinquefolia

Another beautiful little gem of a plant! I love its one inch clear white flowers and delicate leaves. It grows to about 4-8" on slender stems that often will tremble in the breeze, giving it another nickname called Wind Flowers.

Miterwort - Mitella diphylla

This wonderful wildflower is another native plant that you may just walk by without taking a second look! Nestled in front of two rocks along my path, this is slowly spreading into a nice little colony!

If you look closely, it has amazing tiny white fringed flowers(1/6") that bloom along a slender stem. It grows to 8-18", mine grow more like 10-12"tall. The fruit capsule is the shape of a bishop's miter or small cap releasing small black seeds. Sometimes people call it Bishop's Cap!

Virginia Bluebells - Mertensia virginica

I couldn't wait for my virginia bluebells to spread into a large area where my native Rhododendrons are growing. I love their beautiful pink flower buds that turn into gorgeous blue trumpet-like flowers. They are so pretty blooming along my woodland path! They grow 8"-2' and have gray/green leaves that die back and go dormant until next spring.

You might be asking yourself what type of plants do I have after all these wildflowers go dormant? All kinds, is my answer! Just wait and see how the the woodland flora takes over, quickly covering the dying ephemerals. By mid-summer, one would never know there were wonderful native plants lying dormant, just waiting to wow me with their spring show again next year!

Dutchman's Breeches

The early spring wildflowers along my woodland path have finally burst into full bloom this week! After a few days of rain, the warmth of the sun seemed to bring the woods back to life from the long cold winter! Here are a few of the wonderful flowers that are making me smile this week!

The Dutchman's Breeches (above picture) are one of my favorites! The odd flower looks like a pair of pants turned upside down (personally, I think they look like teeth!) They grow up to 12" and have finely cut leaves. Once these plants got established in my woods they began multiplying into large clumps that I divided and transplanted into different areas of the path. After blooming, their leaves die back in the summer. (Interesting fact: Bumble bees are one of the only insects that can reach deep inside the flower with their long tongues to get the nectar.)

They look great with the blue snow glories shown in the picture!

Snow Glories

Beautiful snow glories are beginning to carpet the woodland floor in a sea of blue patches. These lovely star shaped flowers spread quickly and grow to about 4-6". They go dormant after blooming and disappear by the summer.

Spring Beauty

These lovely white to pink dainty native flowers can be enjoyed only when its sunny out! These interesting flowers close each night, on cloudy days, and if you try to pick them! Needless to say, enjoy them where they are growing! Their tubers are edible, but I think I will test that out some other time!

Growing to 6-12" high, they slowly spread by self seeding and spreading rhizomes. After blooming they die back and go dormant until next spring.

Bloodroot

When my husband and I went to the Smokey Mountains, there was a store that was selling these little gems in small packets of 3. I bought a pack just to see if they would live in this area. Wildflowers are quite particular about their habitats and I was quite surprised after two years I finally saw a single white flower popping up from the leaves. 20 years later I have been able to transplant little groups of these wonderful flowers around my path. I just love how they popup with the single leaf wrapped around the stem and then slowly open up as the flower blooms. Bloodroot has gorgeous white petatls and received its name for the red juice within its rhizome. It grows 6-9" and will usually go dormant in the summer on my path when there is not enough rain.

Another interesting fact about this plant is when the seed pod splits open to release the seeds they are often collected by ants and carried away for them to eat the nutrituious outer area of the seed. That helps the bloodroot spread to other areas.

I hope to share more awesome flowers next week. I love this time of year. Each day there is something new to be delighted by! Now is a wonderful time to go hiking in your local woods. Grab your wildflower guide and let me know what you discovered. Just to remind you, wildflowers should never be dug up from public lands unless you have permission! Many local garden clubs or wildflower sanctuaries have annual sales. I live about an hour away from Bowman's Hill Wildflower Sanctuary in PA , over the years I have purchased many of my wildflowers at their annual plant sale. It's first come, first served, so if anyone decides to go to one of these plant sales, go early for the best selection!

Woodland Walk Wednesdays - Early Spring Hepaticas

There is nothing more wonderful than taking a walk in the woods and discovering a beautiful wildflower blooming along the path! These gorgeous blue Hepaticas (hepatica americana) with their dainty creamy white stamens are such a treat to see blooming just as the snowdrops are beginning to fade.

There are two common species of hepaticas that are distinguished by the shape of their three-lobed leaves. On my woodland path, I have both the sharp-lobed hepaticas and the round-lobed hepaticas. They bloom in a range of whites, pinks, purples and blues. The pictures show the round lobed hepaticas, which in my garden, bloom a little earlier than the sharp lobed hepaticas.

When we moved into our home many years ago, it was a far cry from the house we dreamed of, but, it was our little slice of heaven on a pretty wooded 3/4 acre lot. Being avid hikers, we decided to carve out several paths through our woods so we could enjoy hiking through our property everyday if we wanted! With a little thought as to where we wanted to enter into the woods and exit, we began clearing a path with a machete. We let several interesting areas like the large rock we could sit on, the two mature black walnut trees that grow within a few feet of each other, and the wild raspberry patch guide the direction of where the path would go.

We had one of our local tree services come and deliver wood chips for the path. Many times they are happy to deliver it for free if they are working in the area. It isn't aged mulch or finely shredded, it's the chipped trees that they just cut down. Not great for garden beds near the house or foundation, but perfect for a woodland path or beds where you don't mind looking at it until it ages to a nice grey or brown.

It was a lot of work moving 16 cubic yds. of woodchips from the driveway, up a steep hill, across the lawn, and into the woods, one wheel barrel at a time! But it was so worth it! We enjoy our woodland path almost every day and all our dogs have loved it too!

My goal was to keep the beautiful natural woods we had, but enhance them with more of our native wildflowers, trees and shrubs. I had been collecting wildflowers for several years in a little garden I had at the cottage we rented. When we moved, I dug them up and brought them all with me!

This is when my adventure began!

Wonderful Signs of Spring!!

I spotted my first butterfly of the season!

This weekend was filled with the wonders of spring! As I worked in the yard enjoying the warmth of the sun and the sound of the birds, a fluttering of orange caught my eye! When I took a closer look, there was my first butterfly of the season happily flittering from snowdrop to snowdrop!

'Peek-a-Boo' is a red earred slider.

I brought our little turtle outside to soak up some sun too! This upside down cheese cake container works perfect for his outdoor spa! His poor shell needs some sunshine after hiding under a stone all winter. It will look good after a few good days

in the sun.:-)

When I finished raking some of our plant beds, I decided to clean out the filters in our backyard pond. With all the rain we had, quite a bit of debris had fallen into the pond that needed to be fished out. As I reached for a stick, I was startled by a little frog!

I guess our hibernating pond frogs were coming out to enjoy the sun too, because I spotted another one sitting between the stones underneath the waterfall! It was a long cold winter and I was so happy to see them again!

We have a family of gray squirrels that have made a home in the large tulip tree outside our kitchen window. Each spring they chase each other all over our yard, and before we know it, we have alot of little squirrels to watch! Finished with cleaning the pond, I turned around to see a tail sticking out of our birdfeeder! Hmmm, he almost got away with filling up on my gourmet birdseed! He was too cute! I almost felt bad chasing him out of there!

After a long weekend of working in the yard and driving my son back and forth to hockey practice I was ready to relax and wait for my husband and daughter to arrive home from their weekend in Maryland at a soccer tournament! Just as they arrived I saw my second butterfly of the season!

I'm so happy spring has arrived!!

Time To Start Planning Your Vegetable Garden!

Spring is finally here, and it's that time to start planning your vegetable garden! Each year I like to start some of my vegetables by seed. It's so satisfying to see that first little sprout come up!

Most of my vegetables and herbs have been incorporated into my plant beds. I like to do this because it doesn't scream vegetable garden! However, the downfall of this strategy for me, has been forgetting about them!! I may try a raised bed veggie garden this year if I can find a spot in the sun.

During my College years I worked during the summers at an Irish Pub on Cape Cod, Mass. They always had live Irish Bands and we would dance all night while we waitressed. Its amazing I never dropped my tray full of drinks! Its also where I learned to love Guiness Stout and all the other great beers! Snowdrops! First Signs of Spring!

After a long snowy winter, I am so happy to see my lovely snowdrops beginning to bloom! The past five days of rain, washed away the piles of snow that covered our yard, and exposed these beautiful little plants. They are always the first flowers to bloom in my yard and are always a welcomed site! When I see them blooming, I know that spring is just around the corner!

The botanical name for these beautiful spring flowers is Galanthus nivalis, the common name is Snowdrops. I received a handfull of these little 4" flowers from a friend many years ago. When we bought our current house I dug my little patch of bulbs up and brought them with me. Through the years, they have spread everywhere in my yard! I love them! When big groups of them are in bloom, they look like drifts of snow!

One of my favorite things to do each year is share a small pot of them with family, special friends, and neighbors! I have introduced many gardens across the east coast with these friendly little flowers!

Bird watching has always been a passion of mine! Today is the last day of the 2010 Winter Olympics!

Both my sons play Club Hockey, so it was only fitting for our family to be gathered around the TV rooting our USA Hockey Team as they rivaled Canada for the Gold!

It was a great game and although USA is bringing home the Silver, they did a Golden job on the ice and should be proud!

Kitty in My Studio!

Cali is her name! She is a red patch tabby cat that has been with our family for the past 8 years. She was born under our neighbors car while they were on vacation! Her mom was a stray cat from our neighborhood. Our wonderful neighbors took her and the litter into their home until they could find good homes for them all! When my daughter and I went to visit ( I can't go near animals in need, without coming home with one!) Cali instantly chose US, she wasn't the prettiest of the bunch, but she was the funniest and most determined to come home with us! So, that night we trotted home with a tiny little kitten peeking out of my daughters arms.

Being home alot, Cali and I formed a bond that is inseparable. I think, she thinks I'm her mom, because she still to this day tries to suckle on my clothes! She is always by my side, on my shoulder, in my lap, and under my feet which can get annoying sometimes when I'm trying to work!

She loves to steal my chair when I get up, so I wind up standing alot while working in my studio!!(but I don't really mind!)

I spent many months converting my tiny basement into a studio, its almost finished--I just need to put those final touches on it like better lighting and the trim on my work tables. I hope to start writing about that experience with some tips on organizing a workspace very soon!

Cali has always had the freedom to go in and out as she pleased! Whenever she sees the lights on in the basement, shes at the window begging to come in! (You can see her in the top photo!)

But she loves to get into everything! Here she is checking out my raffia! During the Holiday rush I decided to keep it out for convenience, but it caught her curiosity and now its back in its bag!

Here she is while I'm trying to set up a photo session! She would not move until I realized she didn't want to be in the picture, it was the heat from the lamp I was using she wanted! It was getting too dark for pictures anyway so that was postponed to another day!

I really do love her companionship, and her input on my work! (She seems to favor the birds I paint! Hmmm!)

With my dog sleeping by my feet and my kitty on my chair I happily stand, creating my next project!

Memories Around the Tree

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The Holidays for my family, are the celebration of two different religions, Hanukkah and Christmas. When my husband and I had our three children, holidays became the blending of family traditions that had been passed down to us growing up and the creation of new traditions unique to our family!

One tradition that I started when the children were small, happened when I went out to look for a christmas tree skirt and couldn't find one I liked.

So, like any crafter I decided to make one! I chose Snowmen as a theme since I have always loved them!

Never having done a patch work quilt before didn't stop my determination to dive in and create a family treasure that would be updated every year.
With a rough sketch I set out to pickup the materials I needed. I sewed the skirt without much trouble but decided to use fusible webbing for my Snowmen! I divided the skirt into 8 sections, one for each child and one for my husband & I, the other four sections I created christmas trees to be placed between each of the snowmen sections and used velcro to close the skirt.

This section of the tree skirt represents my oldest son. Growing up, he played all types of sports, baseball, hockey,soccer, and football. Our first family dog was chosen by my son from the local animal shelter. This dog was always grabbing his hat, gloves & scarf! In H.S he was the Captan of his hockey team and his varsity letter was added. The buttons represent his college PSU. The cute guinea pig was his pet that he received from his middle school gym teacher!

This snowman is my other son. He has always been willing to help, even at two years of age he alway had a shovel in his hand. The wheel barrel represents his desire to help me in the garden. It's filled with a truck, soccer ball, paint brushes, hockey stick, and our cat that loved following him around! He had a hamster(on his hat), has a bearded dragon(on the shovel) and did all the leg work to find our beloved husky online!

For the past two years I've forgotten to put his varsity letter on maybe this year I'll remember!

My daughter's snowman is wearing a big floppy hat, because as a baby she had no hair for a long time so I used to put all these cute hats on her. Teddy bears were her favorite stuffed animal. She picked out our current cat from our neighbors litter and was an irish dancer for several years. Her snowman is holding her irish shoes. She also rode for quite a few years, represented by the riding helmet. All my children played soccer for years, but she is the only one that is playing for her high school. I will be adding a varsity letter onto her snowman after the holidays also!

Her Chinchilla!

This cute snowman couple represents my husband and I! An avid soccer player, my husband coached all our children's soccer teams and little league teams when they were young. That's why his snowman is holding a soccer ball, wearing a coach's whistle and a baseball bat nearby! Buying an older home he is always busy working on something which the tools represent.

My snowman has three hearts running down the front, one for each child. My love of gardening is reflected with the pot of three topiaries. Each topiary represents one of my children, and the pruners sitting nearby, show how I carefully need to shape and prune them as they grow into happy, healthy, mature adults!

The kids love this tree skirt and my daughter already asked if it could be passed down to her! It's funny how traditions start! Every year I love to add some new detail to our snowmen, it truly is our special story told around the Christmas Tree!

The Rink is Open!

Our Ice Rink is officially open for the 2009 Winter Season!

And my Kids are ready!

Ice Hockey has been a big part of our lives for the past 16 years! Putting up an ice rink every year is one of my husbands favorite things to do. We don't have a swimming pool, but we do have an ice rink!

I love when my children's friends and teammates stop by to skate! It's a lot of fun to watch them having a great time.

When they come off the ice, they can always count on me to have mugs of steaming hot chocolate with marshmallows and chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven waiting for them!!

Yum!!

Even our dog will find a treat or two for her!

The past two years I have been painting these lovely bird ornaments for the holidays. This year's Winter Bird Collection is featuring the White Breasted Nuthatch, Carolina Wren, Eastern Towhee, and the American Goldfinch.

First Snow!

Yesterday we were surprised with our first snow storm of the season! There is something so magical about the first snow! The large lacy snowflakes must have been at least one inch at times! It was just beautiful!

Diary 2010 Project

This diary project is in its third year! It is the vision of photographer/ fashion designer Lucy Baribeau from Fantazya. Its pages have been designed by many wonderful artists and crafters from around the world! And it's now available to purchase. I think it would make a great gift for the coming holidays!

Each page was designed by one artist or crafter and corresponds to a date. It is printed on a beautiful, opaque, very soft quality paper. There are 364 date pages, 8 address pages, 3 notes pages, 12 months page, 2 introduction pages, and 2 year pages. Total: 392 pages with different designs. The cover is plain, so you can decorate it as you like. The size: 4¼" x 7"

This is an example of 2 of the pages in this years diary.

There is also the CD version that contains the complete pdf file, ready to print, with instructions. On the CD you have 2 sizes, small diary: 4¼" x 7" and medium diary: 5½"x 8½".

This year the diary is trilingual: english, french, and spanish !

Pond Construction Update!

It's been a while since I've talked about the construction of the pond in our backyard. This picture was taken early in the construction phase. (If you want to follow its progress it is in August archives.)

After finishing it's construction, we discovered there was a leak somewhere in the waterfall itself. For 2 months of shuffling rocks around and filling in every nook and cranny with a special pond foam filler, we finally fixed it!! It was a definite stumbling block, one I wasn't prepared for, since our small pond in the front yard has been no trouble at all for years.

For those of you who have been following this construction, I thought I would show you the progress we made so far! I'm glad the waterfall is finally flowing with no problems. Just in time for the winter!

Because it got so late in the fall before I could plant, I just used plants I had around my property so it wouldn't be so muddy. I also wanted to make it a little more interesting to look at since we can see it from most of our back windows. But I can't wait until the spring to add more plants and put all the finishing touches to it.

As you can see, it's never the best spot to place a pond beneath deciduous trees! I have my work cut out for me removing all the leaves from the waterfall and pond. But I anticipated that from the beginning and bought a plastic netting to go over the pond. The problem? I never had the time to do it!! Oh well, I'll wait until all the leaves are down and then tackle this job in the freezing cold!!

We are now putting up the sides of our ice rink (you can see the white boards behind the pond) Each year since the kids were little, my husband builds a huge ice rink. I will write about that at some point. Once the temperatures dip below freezing its time to lay the liner, fill the rink with water, and hope for a cold winter! :)

I went out to feed the fish in our new pond and sitting there at the edge is this little frog quietly sitting under this leaf! Usually if I get close enough to him, he jumps into the water. But today he didn't move! I wonder if he thinks I can't see him under his leaf? It reminded me of the days I would play hide and seek with my kids and they would be hiding their bodies but their feet or little bottoms would be showing!!

I guess he is maybe contemplating the coming of winter? What do you think?

Goldfinches! Handpainted Box

This beautiful handpainted wood box depicts a pair of Goldfinches sitting on a tree branch together. These wonderful song birds visit my feeders throughout the year, inspiring me to paint them on this lovely heart shaped box!

A Touch of Fall in My Garden

The Fall is finally here! It's one of my favorite seasons. The cool days and cold nights are a wonderful change from the heat of the summer. I love getting out my cozy sweaters and Uggs!

The leaves are beginning to turn colors and dropping into my ponds! This year I decided to put netting on them to keep the leaves from getting into them. The fish are eating less and less getting their bodies ready for the winter. Many of my annuals are beginning to wither, especially after last nights cold snap.

The last of my fall flowers are blooming! My showy sedums, a variety of golden rods, asters, coneflowers, obedient plants and autumn crocus, remind me this is the last hurrah before winter sets in. My hardy deep pink chrysanthemums, and gorgeous blue monkshood are two of my favorite autumn flowers!

Our cat Cali loves to keep watch over our front yard! She still loves to catch the leaves as they blow around the walk and watch the chipmunks scurrying around gathering berries and nuts.

Our Concord Grapes have taken over our arbor and are perfect for picking if we get them before the birds!

Another fall favorite with the birds are the seeds from the purple coneflowers!

The Goldfinches have been busy eating their seeds! I'm always amazed at how they can sit on their slim stems and feast on the seeds without breaking them. I never cut them down until all the seeds have been eaten. The seed heads look pretty even in the snow and provide food for the winter birds when insects are scarce!

There's always alot to do here in the fall! In between blowing the leaves off the grass, raking acorns from the driveway and cleaning up the plant beds, I love to plant bulbs for the spring!

Nuthatch Painted Box

I just love to paint! It's a passion I've had since 4th grade. It all started when I came home one day and my mother was busy painting a picture of a tree that was in our backyard. I had never seen her paint before and was so surprised how beautiful her painting was! It was at that moment I decided I would learn how to paint too! I have great memories of the days a group of us took lessons with a woman in town. We would sit in her wonderful solarium, paint and chit chat with each other! We all learned alot over those years - our teacher was wonderful and very patient!!

After high school, it had been years before I had time to break out my brushes again. I had my own children this time! My problem is that I love to create in many different ways. I shouldn't call it a problem, or an addiction, but I need to always be creating something --- reading many of your profiles I think many of you are the same way!! So inorder to do one thing, I have to put aside another and that's what happened to my painting.

As I watched the birds in my backyard explore our new pond, stop for a snack at the newly filled feeders and bathe in the bird bath, I got this urge to paint them! Luckily I had an unfinished box to paint on!

I love to make my boxes look old with several steps of painting, appying crackle medium and sanding. There are quite a few steps I have to go through before I can actually paint, but its worth it for the look I wanted to achieve.

I decided to paint this little Nuthatch! They amaze me at how they climb down my large Tulip tree head first! I hope to take a little time this fall to create a small series of boxes featuring birds. I just listed this box on my Etsy and Artfire Shops. http://www.tkdesigns.etsy.com/
